Phase equilibria in a model microemulsion

Abstract

The phase equilibria in an earlier model of a microemulsion are determined for varying values of the surfactant-film-curvature and interaction-energy parameters. When there is no curvature bias (Bancroft parameter = 0), so that the oil and water components play symmetrical roles, we find a critical endpoint, at which the locus of critical points between oil- and water-rich phases and the locus of oil-water-microemulsion triple points both terminate. This is the analog of the Lifshitz point (although the ordering is different) in the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model in vanishing external field. The evolution of the phase diagram as the curvature-bias parameter departs from 0 and as the oil-water interaction energy varies is traced.
