Abstract

A system is assumed, in the framework of extended non-equilibrium thermodynamics, to be described by state variables αi which are ensemble averages of dynamical functions, Ai, and their time-derivatives ηi = \̊gai. A Fokker-Planck type equation is derived by the Zwanzig projection operator technique for g(a, v), the amplitude of the probability that A = a and Å = v. The first moments of this equation give the phenomenological equations which can be cast in Onsager-Casimir canonical form, with forces and coefficients exhibiting reciprocity and non-linear in both α- and η-variables. It is necessary to assume that g is sharply peaked in equilibrium and that a Markovian approximation holds for the particular sets of variables and time-scale chosen. The arguments are illustrated by applying them to heat conduction in a liquid or solid.
