Magnetic symmetry and the electrical conductivity tensor

Abstract

The consequences of magnetic symmetry for the electrical conductivity tensor are discussed on the microscopical basis of quantum statistics. The investigation is motivated by certain agreements between the results of the recent macroscopic approach of Butzal and Birss and those of the earlier microscopic approach of Kleiner. Kleiner's treatment appears mainly correct insofar as symmetry relations are concerned, but appears rather inadequate in connection with Onsager relations. An improved treatment that is not only mathematically correct but also physically relevant is outlined here.
