Non-stationary processes in lasers

Abstract

Buildup and decay processes as the pumping is switched on and off in the single-mode laser with two-level atoms are investigated. We start with the Fokker-Planck equation for the Glauber-Sudarshan quasiprobability distribution function describing the highly excited state of the laser. The equation is solved by means of splitting the processes into different stages using the small parameter in the diffusion term. The distribution function of the buildup process is interpreted macroscopically as a result of averaging the classical deterministic trajectories over random shifts in time. The distribution function of these shifts is calculated for various forms of the “priming” field including the photon vacuum. A critical comparison with the results of other authors is performed in the weak excitation limit.
