A generalized model of satureted synchronous machines

Abstract

Much effort has recently been devoted to improvement in predicting the steady-state and transient performance of synchronous machines based on proper account being taken of the iron saturation effects. Using the physics of saliency and saturation, this paper develops an original general model for including the main-field magnetic saturation in the dynamic equations of the salient-pole synchronous machine. Although armature leakage saturation is neglected, the cross-saturation coupling is included. Also, frequency-dependent effects of eddy currents flowing in solid parts are accounted for using a suitable number of rotor R-L loops in each axis network. Initial numerical results are presented, validating the model stability in simulations and assessing the importance of a proper account of saturation in the prediction of actual short-circuit oscillograms recently recorded on a 370-MVA synchronous condenser.
