Abstract

Diagnosis of many neural disorders requires a good understanding of the skeletal muscle activity (SMA). A new mathematical formulation is developed in this context, which leads to a general computer-aided identification procedure, based on input-output observations. The methodology uses Wiener's functional expansions, thereby exposing the linear, as well as the nonlinear operating features of the SMA system. The essentials of a computational scheme for evaluating the kernels are also outlined. An example using real-life data demonstrates the validity of the proposed technique. The results show that the algorithm can be used for clinical testing of certain myopathies and neuropathies.
