Experimental methods: Revisiting the commandments of experimental economics

Abstract

More than half a century ago, experimental economists came up with a set of rigorous methodological principles that revolutionized the way economists think—and that have defined the field ever since. Pivotal among them are the no-deception norm, the use of abstract instructions, induced-value theory, and the use of incentives in experiments. In this paper I revisit these principles, critically examining their origins and justifications, and explore their stand in current research, given the new challenges posed by online experiments, cross-disciplinary spillovers, and the evolving landscape of behavioral research. I conclude that we have become too rigidly attached to our methodologies and should adopt a more flexible, context-sensitive, and less-dogmatic approach.
