Building resilience for social enterprises: An fsQCA analysis based on the institutional bricolage perspective

Abstract

Social enterprises (SEs) in developing countries struggle with resilience amid institutional voids and conflicting logics, yet research on resilience-building in such contexts is scarce. To address this gap, we first conducted 76 in-depth interviews to identify key resilience factors, then performed fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on 47 follow-up questionnaires to examine effective configurations. Our analysis reveals three distinct institutional bricolage pathways to resilience: (1) substitutive bricolage—early-stage SEs fill institutional voids through team learning and personal networks; (2) regulative bricolage—growth-stage SEs embed government policies into hybrid governance; and (3) synergistic bricolage—maturing SEs orchestrate multi-level logics through trust-based collaborations. Therefore, successful resilience building requires aligning bricolage strategies with institutional accessibility and developmental stage. This study advances institutional bricolage theory and social enterprise resilience literature by showing how SEs evolve from passive institutional adaptation to active institutional shaping, offering practical insights for entrepreneurs and policymakers in institutional uncertain contexts.
