Interest as an influencing factor on student achievement in Economics

Abstract

This paper investigates the question of whether student interest in economic matters influences test achievement in the subject of Economics. The database constitutes a representative sample of 946 male and female students, which was gathered in the federal state of Lower Saxony in Germany in 2016. Using multivariate analyses, student interest in economic topics is analysed incrementally and by holding constant other known influential factors affecting test achievement (e.g. gender, parents socio-economic status, type of school). The results of our analysis prove that interest in economic topics has a highly significant effect on student competencies in Economics, right across all models and also under control of other predictors. The result from this study informs the formulation of specialist didactic considerations.
