Abstract
Nordic non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as wild berries, mushrooms and edible herbs give ecological, nutritional, and cultural value yet remain in a marginal position in European food markets. This study conducts a mixed method combining a descriptive analysis and systematic literature review of journal articles about the adaptability of Nordic NTFPs to the European Food Market. We systematically searched three leading scientific databases (Scopus, Web of Science, and Springer) for English-language peer-reviewed articles published since 2005. Our search for articles by using key terms such as “Finland/ Sweden/ Nordic/ Norway/ Denmark” and “non-timber forest product/ NTFP/ wild berry/ mushroom” resulted in 57 studies for synthesis. Our quantitative analysis presents an overview of publication trends, regional focuses, methodological approaches and bibliographic coupling results for author-keyword co-occurrences in Nordic NTFP research. Based on qualitative analyses, we synthesize seven domains: policy/regulation, cultural significance, supply chain & labour, ecological sustainability, innovation & technology, consumer behaviour & certification, and market entry strategies. We further examine the distribution of thematic domains and their dominant country, and synthesize these findings into a Foundations, Enablers and Outcomes framework to illustrate the adaptability of Nordic NTFPs to European food systems. Adaptability depends on organizational alignment, such as harmonizing Everyone's Right with EU Novel Food and traceability standards, logistical credibility, including cold-chain infrastructure and cooperative hubs, and institutional reliability through authentication, certification, and branding, all of which are shaped by persistent structural barriers and emerging opportunities across governance, technology, cooperation, and cultural value. Together, these factors show that Nordic NTFPs have almost all the credentials to transform from niche products into material contributors toward Europe's sustainable food future.
