A nuclear-electric-hydrogen energy system

Abstract

An integrated nuclear-electric hydrogen energy system is discussed. We describe the main characteristics of the system, including hydrogen production, transport, utilization, and storage. With nuclear energy as the energy source, hydrogen may be produced either electrolytically or thermochemically. Energy transmission as hydrogen through pipelines is more economical than electric energy transmission. Hydrogen has applications as a raw material for the manufacture of fertilizers, petroleum treatment, and steel making. It can also be used directly as a fuel or for electric power generation. It may be applied for transportation, perhaps in the form of a metal hydride.
