Pricing policy and efficient energy use

Abstract

This paper calls attention to the role pricing policy plays in influencing patterns of energy consumption and production. Tables presenting the patterns of specific energy use in the U.S. and in the Asia-Pacific region are presented, and the related pricing policies are discussed to elaborate on the arguments presented. The policy choice of a benchmark for pricing indigenous energy resources and the microeconomic and macroeconomic implications of such policy are also discussed. The paper concludes that significant opportunities exist for improving resource allocations in the consumption and production of energy in the region.
