Automobile energy conservation through increased vehicle efficiency in Canada

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present and apply a methodology for quantifying the possible savings in fuel consumption through improvements in the vehicle mix and in the efficiency of the automobile fleet. This strategy is related to the vehicle alone. It is one of several methods that has been proposed to reduce autombile fuel consumption. The importance of this strategy, however, stems from the fact that it can be implemented in a short period of time and does not interfere with the travel behaviour and habits of trip makers to a large extent, while providing a major reduction in energy consumption. The results of this study indicate a possible 30% savings in the amount of fuel consumed in urban passenger transportation. This estimate is based on fleet improvements that will be reasized if mandatory fleet fuel economy standards are maintained. A further savings of 4% is expected if incentives and disincentives are used to replicate the pattern of new car purchases exhibited during the 1973–74 energy crisis.
