Abstract

Increasing attention has been given to competitiveness in energy markets, particularly in connection with horizontal divestiture. Of particular interest has been the competitive conditions in coal markets in light of merger activities during the 1960s and 1970s. Many analyses of competitiveness in coal markets have been inadequate, in that attention was not given to reserves or proper definitions of markets. This work examines competitiveness in both production and reserve ownership for a well-defined coal market, the Ohio River Basin region. Results support the hypothesis of competitiveness in both production and reserve ownership.
