Operational and market impacts of residential solar photovoltaics using a system operator-derived dispatch framework

Abstract

New Zealand's electricity market was analysed to assess how greater levels of residential solar photovoltaic generation would impact wholesale electricity prices, market stability, and energy supply in a hydro-dominated system. A scenario-based approach compared historical market conditions with counter factual solar scenarios at several realistic adoption rates of households (5 – 20%) using real operational market data. Distributed photovoltaic generation at hourly resolution was modelled as a reduction in grid demand at relevant nodes across the country, and the resulting impacts on the market simulated using a verified replica of the market clearing engine used by the system operator for scheduling, pricing and dispatching electricity across the country's nodal pricing system.
