Abstract

This discussion examines the methodological approach of the paper, ‘PEM fuel cells: Two novel approaches for mathematical modeling and parameter estimation’ [Energy, 290 (2024) 130130] (hereafter referred to as “the paper” or “the authors”). Several aspects are identified for further clarification, including the distinction between minimizing SSEv and SSEi, observed discrepancies in reported parameters, and potential inconsistencies between visual evidence and statistical outcomes. The robustness of the findings could be strengthened by clarifying optimization objectives and expanding the validation process. Additionally, addressing scenarios with no real roots would enhance its practical applicability. An alternative framework is proposed, featuring a robust current-finding algorithm, explicit optimization procedures, and transparent statistical evaluation.
