Study on the impact of renewable energy development on energy poverty in China

Abstract

Against the backdrop of the “dual-carbon” goals, renewable energy development has become an effective way to combat climate change, ensure energy security and eradicate energy poverty. This paper employs panel data from 30 Chinese provinces spanning 2003 to 2021 to investigate the linear and non-linear effects of renewable energy development on energy poverty. The results indicate that renewable energy development can alleviate energy poverty, with this effect being more pronounced in central China, regions characterized by higher levels of technological innovation, and areas experiencing greater environmental pollution. Moreover, panel quantile regression reveals a non-linear relationship between renewable energy development and alleviating energy poverty, with gradually increasing marginal effects. Finally, the panel threshold test finds that renewable energy's effect on alleviating energy poverty mitigation exhibits threshold effects based on green energy efficiency, green credit level and marketization degree. According to the above conclusions, the government should implement differentiated energy governance schemes based on coordinated planning for renewable energy development, and establish an innovative energy-driven poverty alleviation pathway synergistically driven by efficiency enhancement, financial empowerment, and market liberalisation.
