Abstract

This study proposes a passive radiative cooling enhanced liquid desiccant-based atmospheric water harvesting (LD-AWHPRC) device to improve the performance and climatic adaptability of conventional liquid desiccant-based atmospheric water harvesting (LD-AWH) technologies. By incorporating a passive radiative cooling module, the temperature of the desiccant solution can be effectively reduced, thereby increasing the driving force for moisture absorption without the need for active cooling or additional energy input. The operating principle of the LD-AWHPRC device and its associated coupled heat and mass transfer process were systematically presented. A numerical model of the device was then developed and validated through experiments using a physical prototype. The results showed that the LD-AWHPRC achieved significant improvements in water harvesting performance across different climatic zones compared with the conventional LD-AWH, with annual water yield increases ranging from 79.3% to 166.0%. This study demonstrated that coupling passive radiative cooling with an LD-AWH could stably enhance system performance under diverse climates, providing an effective and low-energy pathway for the development of atmospheric water harvesting technologies.
