Abstract

The present work employs a creative and sustainable structure of hydro-kinetic turbines (HKT) and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate green hydrogen and electricity. The system can be installed on water transfer canals worldwide. It also decreases water loss in the canals and occupies no additional land. The system is mathematically modeled, and the models of its main components are validated. Energy, exergy, economic, and environmental (4E) assessments are presented for the system under three main scenarios: Renewable-to-Power (R2P), Renewable-to-Power-to-Hydrogen (R2P2H), and Renewable-to-Power-to-Hydrogen-to-Power (R2P2H2P), along with three additional subscenarios. Parametric analysis demonstrates the impact of the discount rate, degradation rate of the energy system's components, voltage, temperature, and wind speed on the evaluation criteria. The results indicate that the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and Hydrogen (LCOH) are USD 0.04/kWh and USD 7.15/kWh under the R2P and R2P2H scenarios. Lowering the discount rate and improving the degradation rate can significantly decrease the LCOE and LCOH. The system can save 2400 m3/day of water and 66 ha of land. The maximum overall energy and exergy efficiency of the system are 19.81 % and 21.53 %. The system reduces 30167 tons/yr of CO2 by utilizing the R2P and R2P2H scenarios.
