Advanced composites for stressed-membrane heliostats

Abstract

The concept of achieving ultra low cost (∼- $20/m2) and ultra low weight (5 kg/m2) for heliostats is explored theoretically and experimentally; the full-scale size is up to 15-m diameter. The basic innovation of a taut fishnet supporting a stretched membrane across a ring frame is the central theme. Variations include double membranes—a reflective membrane over a structural membrane which can be composed of steel wires or graphite fiber-polymer matrix composites. Wood and graphite composites may be used for the ring frame. The non-linear problem of stress-strain analysis is formulated and solved using NASTRAN. At the time of this reporting, results for the smaller sizes are available. The analysis provides a basis for the design, fabrication, and cost estimates.
