Abstract

Reductions of specific energy consumption for different modes of transportation are analyzed. The fuel and energy resources of the national transportation system are described, and various energy-conservation measures are examined. The most important measures for the trucking industry are optimizing trip distribution among vehicles with different tonnages, adding KamAZ-type trucks to the truck fleet, converting ZIL- and GAZ-type trucks to diesel engines, and further developing compressed natural gas as a vehicle fuel. For air transportation, the most important measures are the improvement of the technical level and the composition of the aviation fleet and the improvement of flight and maintenance operations; for the railroads the recuperation of electricity, the automation of locomotive control, and continued electrification stand out. The expected impact of these and other measures on the national transportation system is discussed.
