Abstract

Up to 30% of the heat and 17% of the electricity produced in the U.S.S.R. is used in residences and for public services, and these percentages are increasing. Electricity consumption in residential buildings is growing rapidly, as a result of the continuing completion of new residential buildings and the increasing number of domestic electric appliances. Electricity consumption in apartments with gas stoves is increasing 4% annually, but only 15% in apartments with electric stoves. Electric consumption per family in 1980 totaled 950 kWh in apartments with gas stoves and 2050 kWh in apartments with electric stoves. Much work is being done in the U.S.S.R. to save thermal power by insulating existing buildings and developing centralized heating supply.
