Economic viability and environmental trade-off of sequential transitions from conventional aquaculture to partial and fully integrated multi-trophic aquaculture in Bangladesh

Abstract

This paper applies an integration of life cycle assessment within a system dynamics (SD) modeling framework to evaluate the economic viability and environmental trade-offs of transitioning from conventional monoculture or polyculture production systems to partial and full integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems in Bangladesh. An SD model was developed in STELLA Architect 4.11® to mimic five IMTA species combinations, along with corresponding partial and conventional aquaculture species, under caged and pond-based production systems. The model was parameterized with primary and secondary datasets, calibrated, behaviorally validated, and simulated over 365 days using a daily timestep.
