Does data element marketization promote supply chain collaborative innovation? A quasi-natural experiment based on data trading platform implementation

Abstract

The establishment of data trading platforms is widely regarded as instrumental in fostering the optimal allocation of data resources and enhancing the innovation capacity of manufacturing firms. To examine whether and how the marketization of data elements influences supply chain collaborative innovation, this study leverages panel data from China’s A‑share listed manufacturing companies between 2011 and 2024, employing a quasi‑natural experiment centered on the rollout of such platforms. The results show that the establishment of data trading platforms significantly promotes supply chain collaborative innovation, an effect that exhibits increasing marginal returns over time. This finding remains robust across a battery of tests, including parallel‑trend validation, PSM‑DID estimation, and endogeneity controls. Moreover, the impact of the platforms varies with firm ownership structures and institutional shareholding characteristics. Mechanism analysis further reveals that the platforms spur collaborative innovation primarily by accelerating inter‑firm knowledge sharing and improving resource‑matching efficiency. Finally, the paper concludes with relevant policy recommendations.
