Abstract

Direct synergy exists between community banks and local economic development, but the regulation of community banks has often been overlooked due to the common misconception that community banks are too small to make a significant impact. This paper demonstrates that bank capital requirements have an inverted U-shaped impact on local unmarried and divorce rates, and a U-shaped impact on married rate in the states where community banks operate. Moreover, the mechanisms through which capital requirements influence marriage decisions are via the supply of investment and insurance financial products by community banks. The expansion of banks’ financial products, triggered by tightened capital requirements, will enhance the banks’ influence on marriage choices. Additionally, regional employment exhibits a threshold effect on the impact of bank requirements on marital structure. The influence of bank requirements on marital structure will significantly increase due to an accelerator effect when local employment reaches a certain level.
