Data elements marketization and enterprise digital transformation

Abstract

Research examining the relationship between data element marketization (DEM) and enterprise digital transformation (EDT) remains limited. This study leverages China's data trading platform construction as a quasi-natural experiment, employing a difference-in-differences (DID) methodology with panel data from Chinese listed companies spanning 2009-2019. The findings reveal: (1) DEM significantly enhances EDT; (2) DEM facilitates EDT through three primary channels: digital technology innovation, digital talent attraction, and fintech development; (3) DEM demonstrates particularly pronounced effects in promoting specific digital technologies within EDT, including cloud computing technology, big data technology, and artificial intelligence technology. Furthermore, the positive impact of DEM on EDT exhibits greater prominence in enterprises located in major cities, southern regions, and areas with robust intellectual property protection. The beneficial effects of DEM on EDT are particularly pronounced in firms without IT-background CEOs, technology-intensive enterprises, and companies in their growth and maturity stages.
