Enhancing green development in poverty-stricken areas from the perspective of energy poverty: Evidence from E-commerce poverty alleviation

Abstract

Energy poverty forces poverty-stricken areas(PSA) to rely heavily on traditional energy extraction and consumption, exacerbating environmental degradation and resource depletion. This reliance significantly hinders their progress toward green development. Therefore, exploring new pathways to achieve green development in PSA within the context of energy poverty has become a critical issue that requires urgent attention. Theoretically, e-commerce poverty alleviation(ECPA) can overcome the constraints of energy poverty in PSA and promote their green development. However, the ability of ECPA to promote green development in PSA has yet to be fully tested. Therefore, this study explores the impact and mechanisms of ECPA on green development in PSA from the perspective of energy poverty. The research results indicate that ECPA can effectively promote green development in PSA. In this process, bridging the digital divide and improving the industrial ecosystem play a positive moderating role. This study provides both theoretical and empirical evidence that ECPA is one of the methods to overcome the constraints of energy poverty on green development in PSA. It offers valuable insights for sustainable development efforts in other regions of the world.
