A study of fidelity to and implementation of a multi-level workforce intervention: Building resilience and supervisor support in public child welfare agencies

Abstract

Child welfare (CW) staff are exposed to families in crisis which often leads to secondary traumatic stress symptoms. When compounded with organizational stressors this exposure can negatively impact the CW workforce by lowering their health and well-being and their ability to engage with families, service providers and colleagues. However, CW research suggests high quality and supportive supervision, positive co-worker relationships and resilience in the face of exposure to high levels of trauma can mitigate the deleterious effects of stressors encountered by the CW workforce. In response to the CW workforce crisis, the Children’s Bureau funded the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) to build evidence of interventions that enhance workforce well-being, reduce turnover, and/or improve child and family outcomes.
