Social engagement, positive psychological attributes, and altruism among young people in Bangladesh

Abstract

The present study is the outcome of the empirical investigation focusing on the relationship between social engagement, positive psychological attributes, and altruism among youth in Bangladesh. Following a quantitative research approach and a multi-stage cluster sampling, data was collected from 612 youths of 42 social organizations using a standardized structured questionnaire. The study has demonstrated that life satisfaction made the most substantial contribution (23.2%) to the variance of altruism, while the predicting three variables jointly contributed 42.8% of the total variance. The results suggest that life satisfaction followed by affective empathy and social network is critical contributors to the altruistic behavior of young people. In contrast, optimism and cognitive empathy was not a predictor of altruism. This study’s findings could aid researchers, policy actors, social workers, and psychologists for effective program designs during a pandemic like the COVID-19 outbreak.
