Ecological factors influencing parenting behaviors during adolescence: A focus on monitoring, attachment, and harsh discipline

Abstract

Parenting has long been known to play an important role in the development of adolescent behavior. However, little is known about the factors that influence parenting itself, particularly parenting during adolescence. Using the data from a Korean Youth Panel study, this study examined factors that affect three parenting behaviors: monitoring, attachment, and harsh discipline. The results showed that multiple factors shaped parenting in adolescence. Adolescent characteristics, marital violence, and neighborhood characteristics were associated with all three parenting behaviors, while maternal education and employment were linked with particular parenting behaviors. This study suggests that parenting was associated with marital and neighborhood support and stress rather than family structure and economic factors, and each parenting behavior had distinctive factors along with common ones.
