Abstract

To evaluate the efficiency of energy utilisation or generation for a process it is useful to compare the real process with theoretical, limiting cases through the application of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Such comparisons give rise to several measures of efficiency. Various approaches to the assessment of efficiency are explained and applied to processes involving heat exchange, separation and chemical reaction.
