Mean effective thermal conductivities of packed-sphere systems

Abstract

The effect of variable porosity on mean effective thermal conductivity of a packed bed is examined theoretically, and the validating region for the constant porosity model is confirmed. For this purpose, the conduction equation for heat transfers through the packed bed is solved numerically by an implicit finite-difference method. The effective thermal conductivity required is evaluated via Bruggeman's effective medium theory. In the analyses, the ratio of the bed's thickness to the diameter of the constituting spheres, and the ratio of the thermal conductivity of a dispersed phase to that of a continuous phase in the packed bed, are varied.
