Abstract

Mathematical simulations are presented for an ideal single-effect diffusion still. This still is expected to have the highest possible operational efficiency for this type and therefore could be used as a reference. The governing equations that simulate the performance of the still are derived and simplified along with a set of supporting equations. The effects of five aparametric conditions on the performance of the ideal still are considered. The parametric conditions are: the ambient temperature, the solar irradiation, the thickness of the diffusion gap, the kind of diluent gas, and the average emittance of the water-absorber in the still. The performance of the still is presented in terms of the water temperature in the still, the cover temperature, the distillation rate, and the operational efficiency. Three numerical correlations were developed to predict the performance of the ideal single-effect diffusion still.
