Recovery and utilisation of heat from domestic waste water

Abstract

The usage of energy in domestic and other dwellings for the production of hot water is compared with the total energy consumption of the establishment, and it is shown that the relative amount is strongly dependent upon the social class and life-style of the occupants. In the middle classes about one-third of the total energy input is used to provide hot water, and a large proportion of this heat is potentially recoverable when the water is discharged to waste. Experimental studies have been carried out on a heat recovery system installed in a house which have shown that a 10 per cent saving in the total energy consumption can be effected for a capital expenditure that is recouped in three years.
