Abstract

The residue of the New Jersey vertical retort process for the extraction of zinc contains non-ferrous metals and a high amount of carbon. By suspension smelting the heat content of these residues may be used for the volatilisation of the metals. A flue dust with a high content of non-ferrous metals will be recovered; the inert material may be dumped as a sterile slag harmless to the environment. In co-operation with Babcock and Wilcox, Lurgi has conducted tests sponsored by Compagnie Royale Asturienne des Mines, of Auby, France. These volatilisation tests took place in a flash smelting furnace at the Bergakademie Freiberg, and in a cyclone furnace of a power station in Westphalia (West Germany) on pilot and commercial scales. Concentrates with 40 + per cent Zn + Pb were obtained. The tests are reported in this paper in detail. The general idea of suspension smelting may be applied with good results to other high-temperature reactions.
