In Butler (1980) we trust? Typology of citer motivations

Abstract

•Analyze citation motivations of Butler (1980) to ascertain scientific contribution.•Identify nine distinct categories of citer motivation.•Citations indicate mostly ‘soft’ knowledge utilization and development.•“Matthew effect” may pertain wherein established academics tend to be over-cited.
