► This is a special issue related to the XI Spanish–Portuguese Symposium on Plant Water Relations. ► Main achievements of Spanish and Portuguese groups working on plant water relations are shown. ► This preface pays homage to Prof. Manuel Sánchez-Díaz. ► A brief description of the papers included in this issue is given.
