Teorías y medidas de convergencia demográfica: una aplicación a nivel subnacional en América Latina

Abstract

La convergencia de las tasas de mortalidad y fecundidad es uno de los temas más debatidos en demografía. No queda claro si la convergencia de las tasas demográficas entre grupos de población y regiones sería continua. En este documento se examina esta cuestión, prestando especial atención a las disparidades subnacionales en América Latina. El término “convergencia” tiene múltiples interpretaciones y el uso de diferentes medidas y métodos puede generar distintas conclusiones. En esta publicación también se revisan algunos indicadores de mortalidad y fecundidad y medidas de disparidad, para evaluar la convergencia y la divergencia. Se analiza su adecuación, proponiéndose una nueva tipología para interpretar la convergencia en la demografía. Aunque se presenta una aplicación a los estados brasileños para mostrar los usos e interpretación de estas medidas, cabe considerar que un enfoque similar podría aplicarse a distintos contextos. Se argumenta que el uso combinado de múltiples medidas de convergencia describe mejor los procesos analizados y que distintas variables demográficas pueden requerir distintos indicadores de dispersión.
