Abstract

Recent economic literature has pointed out the role of cognition and knowledge spillovers intra and inter companies, as well as between Universities and companies, claiming that these relationships constitute a mechanism for knowledge transmission and that they are a necessary condition, although not a sufficient one, for the success of innovation. In particular, the role of universities in the processes of knowledge transmission is questioned, hoping that, in the presence of spillovers from Universities to companies, their performance will be influenced by the fact that they are located near a University. It is also to be expected that the University is on the basis of production of human capital for companies, with emphasis on tacit knowledge. In this project we have used data from IFQUATRO and tested the existence of positive externalities over the performance of Portuguese companies, relating it with the distance from Universities. The indicator used as measure for company performance is work productivity.
