25 Jahre Euro: Viele Krisen gemeistert, viele Herausforderungen stehen an

Abstract

Im Jahr 2024 feiert der Euro sein 25-jähriges Bestehen. Die Stabilität des Euroraums und damit der europäischen Gemeinschaftswährung wurde seit dem Jahr 1999 mehrfach auf die Probe gestellt, insbesondere während der weltweiten Finanzkrise 2008/09 und der sich anschließenden europäischen Schuldenkrise. Aber der Euroraum hat diese Herausforderungen erfolgreich gemeistert. Ihr Mandat, Preisstabilität zu gewährleisten, konnte die Europäische Zentralbank als Hüterin des Euro weitestgehend erfüllen. Die hohe Inflation der letzten zwei Jahre scheint die EZB in den Griff zu bekommen. Nun stellen der Klimawandel, die Digitalisierung, die steigende Ungleichheit und die Staatsverschuldung sowie zunehmende geopolitische Spannungen die EZB vor neue Herausforderungen. Der vorliegende Wochenbericht analysiert diese Herausforderungen und mögliche Handlungsoptionen. Deutlich wird, dass die EZB diesen Themen gemeinsam mit den nationalen Regierungen und der Europäischen Kommission begegnen muss, um den Euro als starke Währung beizubehalten.
