Abstract

According to information from the Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP), the proportion of people with statutory health insurance who have taken out private supplementary health insurance has more than doubled to around 13 million since 2000. The increase in supplementary health insurance policies for dental treatment was particularly strong: these have more than quadrupled. One of the possible reasons for this development may be continuous restrictions on the range of services covered by statutory health insurance. Private supplementary health insurance policies are primarily purchased by people with higher incomes as well as by individuals with a higher education or by those in good health.
