Abstract

Following a period of stagnation in 2012, the economic outlook for the construction industry next year is considerably brighter. DIW Berlin predicts nominal growth of five percent for construction volume in Germany. In real terms, taking into account inflation, construction volume is expected to increase by two percent in 2013. This is primarily due to the expected stabilization in the volume of orders in public sector construction after a sharp decline in the current year. It is the main construction industry that is expected to profit most from the upturn in the construction industry. As well as the recovery of public construction, another contributing factor here is the increase in construction of new housing resulting from many investors' desire for secure forms of investment. As far as existing residential buildings are concerned, however, there is currently little movement due to unclear subsidy conditions. Commercial construction prospects are also somewhat subdued in the current economic climate.
