25 Jahre SOEP: politikrelevant, forschungsorientiert, exzellent

Abstract

In Deutschland gibt es in Teilen der Bevölkerung und der medialen Öffentlichkeit eine große Abneigung gegenüber Erhebungen von individuellen Informationen, die Auskunft über die Lebenslage oder über persönliche Einstellungen geben können. Deshalb überrascht es auch nicht, dass uns die UNO vorrechnen kann, dass wir zu den nicht mehr als einem oder zwei Dutzend Staaten auf der Erde gehören, die keine einigermaßen aktuellen Ergebnisse einer Volkszählung vorweisen können. Dennoch ist in kaum einem anderen Staat der Welt heute die Datenlage und der Zugang zu Individualdaten für Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftler so günstig wie bei uns. Das ist ein deutsches Paradoxon, für das das Sozio-oekonomische Panel (SOEP) ein entscheidender Beleg ist. Nicht zuletzt der politisch erzwungene Verzicht auf amtliche Großzählungen hat dazu beigetragen, andere Wege zu beschreiten, um an die für die Politikberatung und für die wissenschaftliche Analyse erforderlichen Individualdaten heranzukommen und am Ende eine in ihrer Breite und Tiefe exzellente Forschungsdateninfrastruktur in Deutschland aufzubauen.
