Abstract

The literature on the innovation process usually highlights the importance of physical proximity in order to support innovation. However other research qualified this statement by valuing remote relations in the innovation process. More than a trade-off between physical proximity and distance, one can bring to light a trend for some companies to combine close and remote relations in R&D activities, especially in the framework of clusters, which contribute to spread companies’ innovation activities and to open clusters but without making them disappear. However the modes of governance of such a « proxistance » need to be further analysed. This is our intention in this article on the basis of an exploratory study on innovative activities from different categories of organisations, whether they are multinational or not, within the French competitiveness cluster « Véhicule du Futur ».
