Abstract

(VA) Our research aims to test the influence of the internationalization process on the international performance of Asian emerging economies multinationals. We built a database of 1132 year observations which helped us to assess various central aspects of the internationalisation process: the rhythm of commitment, the target country risk, and the cultural distance between home and host country. We showed that emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNE) with the highest performance are the one following an early commitment abroad. We also identified that there was an inverted quadratic relation between international performance and country risk and between international performance and cultural distance. These results enable us to question the use of Western theories to study EMNE and to provide interesting suggestions for EMNE.
