Abstract

This paper investigates the innovation behaviour of successful big German multi-generation family businesses. Questions arise as to how family businesses produce innovations and ensure continuous development in the long term. In particular, attention is paid to the role played by the entrepreneur families themselves in connection with long-term innovation capacity and thus entrepreneurial success. The paper attempts to answer the question: „What is the understanding and control of innovation by means of which big multi-generation family businesses have evolved in Germany?“ -- According to public opinion, family businesses are often associated with the idea that tradition is concomitant with an attitude of „We've always done it like that, so why should we change?“ The present study paints a different picture of successful family businesses: instead of „stagnation for reasons for tradition“, it reveals a distinctive „tradition of innovation“. From generation to generation, the owner families were aware of the fact that the entrepreneurial environment required them to act dynamically and flexibly and thus to renew and develop their company constantly. Owing to this influence, the performance of family businesses was often higher than that of non-family businesses; family businesses fostered a culture of radical and progressive innovation in order to safeguard their long-term viability and to generate profits. The aim of all the innovation activities is long-term growth, viability and prosperity.
