Abstract

Introduction: Pageviews of encyclopedia articles can track public attention to augmented reality games, but evidence from Latin American readerships is scarce. This study described the volume, trajectory, launch response, regional composition and cross-edition relation of that attention in the Spanish and Portuguese editions of Wikipedia. Methods: Ecological time-series study of open Wikimedia pageviews from 2016 to 2024. Articles of an English Wikipedia category on augmented reality games with Spanish or Portuguese counterparts were followed, summing views over titles and redirects. Analyses used descriptive statistics, Kendall and Spearman coefficients and an exact Wilcoxon test. Results: Fourteen articles recorded 3,855,441 pageviews, 71.4% in Spanish. Pokémon Go held 87.0% and 91.3% of the Spanish and Portuguese totals. Among 7 paired articles, the Spanish edition obtained a median of 3.0 times the Portuguese views (exact Wilcoxon p = 0.016). The 5 series with a page at release peaked within one month of it, at 1.8 to 142.9 times baseline. Monthly series of the editions correlated (Spearman 0.90), falling to 0.22 without Pokémon Go. Conclusions: Attention concentrated in one title and in the launch month, decayed quickly and was synchronized across editions mainly by that event. Pageview series are a low-cost indicator of launch attention, limited by article creation delays and language-based data.
