Comics as a learning strategy in the area of ​​social sciences for secondary school students

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of comics as a learning strategy in Social Studies classes for second-grade secondary school students in the Dominican Republic. Using a quantitative and descriptive approach, 121 students were involved in an intervention where comics were created about hurricanes, demographics, and the Dominican Republic's independence. The results of an online questionnaire were then analyzed. The data show that 67.8% of students find that comics make classes more interesting, while 52.9% say they help them understand complex topics. Furthermore, 63.3% emphasize that they encourage communication and the exchange of ideas, and 60.3% consider them more fun than traditional methods. These findings indicate that comics not only make learning more dynamic but also develop skills such as critical thinking and collaboration, aligning with the goals of the Ministry of Education and Culture (MINERD) (2023).
