Rousseau, philosophie et économie

Abstract

"Travail et richesses, besoins et désirs, luxe, commerce, argent" : Rousseau partage avec la théorie économique - de son époque et de la nôtre - un vocabulaire qui témoigne de préoccupations communes. Comme les économistes, il recherche les conditions qui permettraient de concilier bonheur des individus et prospérité de l'État. Pourtant, entre l'oeuvre de Rousseau et la théorie économique, le dialogue est difficile à établir. D'abord du fait de la méfiance de Rousseau à l'égard de l'économie et des économistes qui lui sont contemporains, avec lesquels il est manifestement peu désireux d'entrer en discussion. A cette méfiance correspond chez les économistes une indifférence aux analyses de Rousseau: aujourd'hui encore, à l'exception notable de Bertil Friden pour qui l'oeuvre économique de Rousseau annonce les analyses de Sen ou d'Akerlof, Rousseau suscite davantage l'intérêt des philosophes qui s'intéressent à l'économie que des économistes eux-mêmes.
