Abstract

The transformation of the Army in Nicaragua is analyzed from the context of the conflict in this country, starting from the coup d’état against the Somoza dictatorship, the disarticulation of the National Guard and the establishment of the Sandinista National Liberation Front in power. Based on the foregoing, the process of creating the Sandinista Popular Army and the formation of military structures to combat the attacks of the counterrevolutionary forces, known as “Los Contras”, are detailed. Likewise, a consideration is made about the Esquipulas Agreements that resulted in the democratization of Nicaragua and the demobilization of the counterrevolutionaries. Finally, the role of the Armed Forces and institutions in the post-conflict, which led to the current situation in the country, is evaluated, all of this through a case study method with consultation of specialized secondary sources.
